The live action Batman tv show starring Adam West and Burt Ward aired from 1966-1968. It was known for its simple, humorous morality and famous theme song. A constant component throughout the show were the interjections made by Robin. He would often exclaim “Holy ___ Batman!” He would fill in the blank with things they encountered while solving crimes, such as “holy jigsaw puzzles Batman” or “holy straightjacket Batman!” In 120 episodes, Robin made 356 different “holy” expressions.

While this may be a funny expression in the show, the Bible takes holiness very seriously. As Christians, we are commanded to live a holy lifestyle, just as Jesus did. In light of everything God has done for us, our lives should reflect His holiness to the world around us. Building off of an old testament command, 1 Peter 1:13-16 tells us what is necessary for a believer to live a holy lifestyle.

13  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:13-16

1. You must be hopeful

Where we put our hope determines how we live. Truly putting our hope in Christ requires staying connected to His word. This prepares our minds so we can live out the promises of God.

2. You must be holy

God is holy, and He has called His people to be like Him. Jesus has brought salvation to the world so that we can become holy and represent God’s character to those around us. We must leave behind the ways of the world to live like Christ.

The goal for followers of Jesus is to look like the Father. Since He is a holy God, we must live a holy lifestyle.
